Jian-ping Wu
Chinese Documentary Photographer

Jian-ping Wu is a Chinese documentary photographer born in Quzhou, Zhejiang Province. Working primarily with large-format film, his practice is rooted in long-term observation and sustained engagement with people, place, and social change.

From 1997 to 2006, Wu documented families and communities in Shanghai’s Pudong district during a period of rapid urban transformation. This decade-long body of work was published as Pudong Households by Shanghai People’s Fine Arts Publishing House in 2016.

His earlier publications include Tibetan Portraits (China Photographic Publishing House, 1997) and Mountain Sun (China Photographic Publishing House, 2000). In 2006, he studied black-and-white darkroom printing with American photographer John Sexton, a former photographic assistant to Ansel Adams.

In 2015, Wu’s Great Wall series received the Gold Award and Lifetime Achievement Award in Photography at the first Paris International Art Fair.

His recent long-term projects include The Great Wall and Lone Sail: The Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, continuing his exploration of landscape, history, memory, and the relationship between people and their changing environments.
